The billions of dollars mistakenly paid to deceased beneficiaries and those who no longer qualify because they are working gets lots of publicity. But many would be surprised to now that Social Security mistakenly declares thousands of recipients dead each year & terminates there benefits. Naturally, this happens to the most vulnerable: the elderly and disabled.
Approximately 14,000 people are declared dead each year, most due to data entry errors onto the Death Master File. And once you are on it, good luck getting off, according to a recent CNN story. Apparently it can be quite a struggle to prove one is alive.
There are other implications besides termination of Social Security benefits, as well. Banks, credit bureaus and others routinely purchase information from the Death Master File impacting one’s ability to get credit or even rent an apartment.
